Some samples of our first products; a few available on Etsy, a few works-in-progress, a few vintage favorites. Most of the concepts described here are leading up to more evolved formulas with more definitive mythological connections. For the time being, I am exploring simplified "workshop" versions, and look forward to sharing these on Etsy, Ebay, and local Los Angeles venues. Sample, experiment, share your thoughts, help me tell the stories! Leave a review or feel free to email directly to [email protected]. Facebook coming soon. Sometimes you need to throw serious study aside and just do something whimsical. Hence: Halloween perfumes. Taking three of my favorite Stephen King tales, I tried to create the scents that pervade the stories. It's not hard, being from Maine. Mainers are practically weaned on King. I had a recent visit back home and re-connected with the scents of my childhood. Dark woods and mossy streams, warm golden grass, sour-bitter herbs and sweet-musty wildflowers. Old barns, leather, tobacco, the beautiful filthy brine of the Atlantic...Maine is a perfumer's dream. |
While taking a class in ancient Greek perfumery, I learned that the traditional ingredients used to worship Aphrodite are Rose, Apple, and Seaweed - I had to try that combo! Then I got thinking of her long-neglected husband, Hephaestus. How come no-one worships the forge master? Time to make my own tribute.

This set of three fragrances is part of an idea I've been exploring: the cycles of human desire. To love or possess, to explore or discover, and perhaps most poignantly, the desire to become. Tales of transformation are among the most enticing our society has to offer: from My Fair Lady to home makeovers, we are riveted by change. Each of these fragrances examines a powerful facet of our motivations and obsessions.

This part of the cycle of desire concerns the lure of the unknown: those wild places in the world that intimidate and entice. Inspired by the tales of iconic 19th century horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, these works-in-progress are some of the most challenging I've undertaken. Not that perfumery is ever easy. But capturing the foreboding and exhilaration of these tales is utterly absorbing.
